Murky, wet areas are also needed for sheltering:
Bog turtles, like many other pond turtles, are secondary consumers on the trophic level. It eats many plants, small insects, berries, and seeds. Its predators can be skunks, foxes, dogs, and raccoons. [1]
Interactions
Intraspecific: Like many other pond turtles, bog turtles like to travel to different areas in groups, mainly because of protection and also because, well, they don't want to be a loner. [2]
Interspecific: Bog turtles share mutualism with fish in ponds and swamps. When bog turtles swim in the pond, algae usually sticks on their backs, and since their cute little limbs cannot reach the shell, they are stuck with algae on their backs. Fish come along and since they are hungry, they eat the algae off of the bog turtles. Fish get food, turtles get clean shell. What a nice deal. [1]
Although the turtles in the picture above aren't bog turtles, this is what would happen if they are in the ponds and swamps for too long.
